چکیده

Today, more and more enterprises process XML data, many of them already in XML database systems. Once systems start to grow in size, scalability becomes an issue. One of the core operations during insert processing is the index maintenance. Typical relational systems only have few indexes per table, however, XML database users already look at creating hundreds of XML indexes per XML column. A similar situation is present during query processing when many indexes are present which the system can choose from and has to combine them for optimal performance. This creates new challenges for the database system – unknown in the traditional relational world. In this paper, we discuss those index challenges and possible solutions.

OrientX : A Schema-based Native XML Database System

The increasing number of XML repositories has provided the impetus to design and develop systems that can store and query XML data efficiently. Non-native XML method could not adequately be customized to support XML, native XML database will be more efficient. Most of existed XML database systems claimed that their systems are schemaindependent. But we argue that schema plays an important role ...

Advanced Storage Structures for Native XML Databases

The XQuery Update Facility has turned native XML databases from static document-oriented database systems to general purpose transactional systems. Consequently, data structures allowing both fast read and write operations have become a necessity. This thesis presents several such structures and focuses on the challenges that emerge by their application in a native XML database. A new algorithm...

A Join Index for XML Data Warehouses

XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native-XML database management systems (DBMSs) currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research for ways to optimize them. In this paper, we propose a new join index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses. It eliminat...

On Indexing in Native XML Database Systems

Database indices are fundamental data structures that improve the speed of data retrieval operations. In this paper, we focus on native XML database systems and provide an elementary survey of existing approaches for indexing semistructured data employed in selected academic open-source systems. Considering the requirements set for a particular system, ExDB, and the results of the accomplished ...

Framework-Based Development and Evaluation of Cost-Based Native XML Query Optimization Techniques

Reflecting on the history of database management systems reveals that cost-based query optimization has been the dominating method for effectively answering complex queries on large documents. Native XML database management systems provide an efficient infrastructure for storing, indexing, and querying large XML documents. Even though such systems can choose from a huge set of structural join o...
